Thanks to KC Dog Blog for this thorough report on the details behind the 32 dog-related fatalities in America in 2009.
It's interesting to note that most of the victims were young children (why were these toddlers and infants left unsupervised?), and a high percentage of the cases involved dogs who were kept on chains. Many were in extremely impoverished areas. These social trends, more than a certain breed or type of dog, are much more likely to result in tragedy. A dog who lives its life on a log chain behind the trailer isn't a healthy, socialized dog, no matter what breed it is.
